Šiuo metu egzistuoja trys pagrindiniai UPS tipai: Standby, Line Interactive, Online.

Standby UPS tipas. Šitame režime esant normaliai įėjimo įtampai apkrova yra maitinama per filtrą, kuris nufiltruoja visus tinklo trukdžius ir statiškai persijungia. Tuo pačiu metu per lygintuvą yra kraunama akumuliatoriaus baterija. Dingus įtampai ar jai padidėjus, sumažėjus, jungiklis automatiškai persijungia ir apkrova pradeda maitintis iš akumuliatoriaus baterijos. Jungiklis yra elektroninis ir jo persijungimo trukmė yra >3ms. Įskaitant tai, kad beveik visų įrenginių maitinimo blokai yra impulsiniai, tai persijungimas įvyksta be elektros energijos nutraukimo.

Line Interactive UPS tipas. Šis tipas skiriasi nuo Stand – By, nes ji turi specialų transformatorių. Šitas transformatorius išlygina įtampos šuolius, UPS akumuliatoriaus bateriją naudoja rečiau, tuo pačiu metu prailgindamas akumuliatoriaus darbą. Žinoma, šie UPS yra aprūpinti žymiai modernesniais filtrais nuo įvairių impulsinių ir radijo trikdžių. Šito UPS tipo transformatoriaus antrinė apvija turi keletą papildomų atšakų, ir kontrolerį, UPS jungiklį tarp šitų apvijų, tam tikslui, jei pasikeis įėjimo įtampa, kuri gali pakeisti išėjimo įtampą, kuri yra palaikoma tam tikrose ribose.

Online UPS tipas. Šio tipo UPS veikimo principas yra sekantis: išėjimo įtampa patenka į lygintuvą, iš jo nuolatinė įtampa patenka į keitiklį (tuo pačiu metų pakraudinėja akumuliatoriaus bateriją), o keitiklis suformuoja kintamą įtampą. Įtampos dingimo atveju ar jos padidėjimo ar sumažėjimo nustatytose ribose metu inverteris pradeda dirbti nuo akumuliatoriaus baterijos be jokio persijungimo. Esant perkrovoms UPS apkrova persijungia per “Bypass” (pav. Trumpas jungimas, UPS perkaitimas) be pertraukimų, bet tuo pačiu metu trikdžiai filtruojasi LC – filtru.

V nurodoma įtampa voltais, A – srovė amperais, W – galingumas vatais. W = VA x PF (PF – galingumo koeficientas).

Nurodomas aktyvus galingumas, kurį gauna kintamos srovės vartotojas. Įprastai jis siekia 0,9. Tobulomis sąlygomis koeficientas = 1 bei W = VA.
